Anyone looking to move forward with EV charger home installation will inevitably ask, “how long will it take my electric car to charge?”. The answer to this is highly variable as both the charger and the car in question affect how long it will take.

Modern EVs will have different maximum charge rates ranging from 50 kW to 250 kW and beyond. These numbers do not mean much for home charging as they dictate the maximum rate while using a DC fast charger at charging stations.

For the purposes of home charging, we need to look at the EV’s internal charger, which converts your home’s AC power into DC. This metric is less advertised but should be easy to find in the owner’s manual. Depending on the model, these internal chargers can handle single-phase power at 7.4 kW and below (Level 1 Charging), up to three-phase 22 kW power (Level 2 Charging).

Level 1 charging will typically add 10-20 km of range per hour, while Level 2 charging will add 40-100 km per hour. Many systems can also be configured to only start charging during off-peak hours, saving you even more on the charging cost.

It’s important to note that if you are looking at a Tesla charger installation, it will come with a proprietary plug. While almost all EVs use a CHAdeMO or CCS plug, Tesla has their own plug, so if you have a friend over with a non-Tesla, they’ll need an adapter to charge from a Tesla home charger.
